For Lviv’s Ukrainians Ruska Street was the only “legal” place to settle in the town centre. As sh... more For Lviv’s Ukrainians Ruska Street was the only “legal” place to settle in the town centre. As shown by the municipal books, after conflagrations in 1527 and 1571 the Ukrainian district consisted of 23 plots, on which stood mostly good-quality stone buildings, which constituted approximately 10% of all the housing in the centre of the town.
Most of the Ukrainians who owned property at Ruska Street were merchants. They gathered capital to reinforce the legal position of the Ukrainian community, marked by privileges, accorded constructions and the reconstruction of the church in Ruska Street. Almost all artisans arriving in Lviv rented workshops in the suburbs, and only the richest were able to buy houses in Ruska Street.
The legal and economic subsoil of the Ukrainian community of Ruska Street facilitated
successful reforms in community life in the 16th century, when the famous Dormition brotherhood in 1586 was reorganized on new principles. The brotherhood initiated many successful reforms in the cultural and educational life of the Ukrainian community in many Ukrainian and Belorussian lands.

The book contains historical research and sources about the Lviv Epiphany Brotherhood of the 18th... more The book contains historical research and sources about the Lviv Epiphany Brotherhood of the 18th Century, which operated at the Church of the Epiphany of the Lord in the Halych suburb (localized in the blocks of the transitional modern streets of Kniaz Roman, Ivan Franko and Gertsen). The publication examines the problems of founding a brotherhood, the legal and economic principles of the activity of confraternity, the relationship with the Church power and the local pastors. The sources of the work were the financial books of the brotherhood, the catalog of members, the acts and court documents stored in the Lviv archival and museum repositories.

The goal of this volume is to investigate examples of transcultural communication processes in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as well as in the eastern territories of the Polish Crown in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The essays focus on interconfessional contacts, trans- and supraconfessional interactions, and hybrid, heterogenous developments. In addition, fi elds of east Slavic, Ruthenian, Polish, Lithuanian, Armenian, as well as Orthodox, Uniate, Catholic, Jewish, and Frankist history, which might seem at fi rst glance isolated from interethnic or interconfessional fields of interaction, will be examined anew. The volume presents the work of international specialists on nobility, city, Church and clergy, liturgy, hymnography, as well as painting, and it offers insight into the respective research workshops.

On the basis of archival and published sources, the author reveals the main facts of Danylo’s history, his family ties, owning the villages and estates, his military duties in the service of Prince Volodyslav of Opole and King Władysław Jagiełło. The article disproves the false hypothesis about his Wallachian origin. Cyrillic diploma with the land possessions of Danylo Zaderevetskyi, granted in 1371, for the first time is published in this article, as also the map with his land estates, obtained by him throughout life.

First of all, it was stimulated by the new source findings of art historians. The newly found document about Yuri Vyshlovsky, a famous 18th-century engraver, from the Lviv Unity Bishopric, provides new information on the spread of icons on Ukrainian lands, and is unique in view of new data on the organization of production and distribution of engraved icons in Western Ukrainian.

In this fifth volume of Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s History, the eminent historian focuses on the socia... more In this fifth volume of Mykhailo Hrushevsky’s History, the eminent historian focuses on the social, political, and ecclesiastical structures and relations of the Ukrainian lands during the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries. Here the main topics are the evolution of the social order, the functioning of civil administration, church organization, and the circumstances that led to a split in the Ruthenian-Ukrainian Church.

Hrushevsky’s narrative draws from an exhaustive examination of scholarly literature on the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland as it relates to the Ukrainian territories. His careful examination of sources, especially legal codes and taxation records (many of which had been published under his editorship), and discussion of historical terms explore the complex relations of diverse strata of the population. Although he focuses on the Ruthenian-Ukrainian population, he also deals with other ethnic groups (Poles, Jews, Armenians, and Lithuanians). In comparing developments in the Ukrainian lands under Lithuania with those under Poland, the historian highlights differences in governance and society, which remained even after the Union of Lublin (1569). He is especially critical of the consequences of adopting the model of Polish nobiliary society, including the subjugation of the peasantry and the decline of cities. After tracing the evolution of the structures of the Orthodox Church, he examines the genesis of the Uniate Church at the Union of Brest (1596), an event that shook the foundations of Ukrainian society. In sum this volume, together with volumes 4 and 6, gives the first complete academic examination of Ukraine between what Hrushevsky saw as the fall of princely Rus' and the rebirth of the Cossack age. Hrushevsky’s dedication to the study of the popular masses allowed him to trace the continuities of Ukrainian history in a time of statelessness and the alienation of elites.

The transitional Lithuanian-Polish period in Ukrainian history, in comparison to the period of s... more The transitional Lithuanian-Polish period in Ukrainian history, in comparison to the period of statehood in the Cossack era and the Cossack Hetmanate’s autonomous life as a state, was probably the most difficult for Hrushevsky to conceptualize. The historian found it difficult to divide the sociopolitical and economic history of the Lithuanian and Polish states into Ukrainian (Ruthenian), Polish, and Lithuanian components; similarly difficult was distinguishing the Belarusian from the Ukrainian component in the joint cultural heritage of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Commonwealth. To this day historians strive to evaluate this common heritage that cannot be regarded as belonging to one side or the other.
Hrushevsky wrote the History during a time when, as Miroslav Hroch put it, Ukrainian national awareness was in the cultural phase of its development. Ideas about the continuity of the historical process and the integral unity of all the Ukrainian lands that Hrushevsky presented as scholarly postulates and that formed part of the research paradigms of his work became focal points of scholarly discourse. Subsequent Ukrainian historians have utilized and modified these ideas, and they continue to rework them in creative ways.126 In central and eastern Europe, the era of ‘national’ historiography during which the History was written has passed. Nonetheless, for historians the work of Hrushevsky, especially the sixth volume published here, has remained not only an accomplishment of distinguished erudition and professional scholarship but also a source of intellectual inspiration, structure, and hypotheses,
as well as a master narrative of social, cultural, religious, and national history. One cannot imagine the intellectual underpinnings of scholars today studying the late medieval and early modern history of Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, and Poland without the History of Ukraine-Rus'. Both the reception and the critique of Hrushevsky’s conceptions have been of great and continuing importance in fostering deeper and broader analysis of the critical, transitional period in Ukrainian history that was the Lithuanian and Polish era.

It was after a long period of the Soviet censorship and reprisals that, upon the gaining of indep... more It was after a long period of the Soviet censorship and reprisals that, upon the gaining of independence and restoring intellectual freedom in their land, the Ukrainian legal historians entered a new era, particularly in the area of publication of normative acts of the medieval and modern epochs. Kyïv and Lviv became the centres in which the research on legal history was made and the editing of historical documents was taken up. Some editing being also made in Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Odessa and Poltava. The editing taken up un that period may be divided into several thematic groups. These were: constitutional and legal history (the acts and documents referring to Galych-Volynian Duchy, Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and particularly the Cossack State (Het'manshchyna) of the 17 th through 18 th centuries ; social history (citizens of towns, peasants, nobles); history of the Church (particularly that of the Greek-Catholic Church); history of art and culture. Upon the end of the Soviet era the censorship and particular limitations were lifted, the number of publications considerably increased, the range of studied themes and research publications was broadened, the emphasis was laid on the publishing of comprehensive sets of normative acts. Among the negative tendencies in publishing legal sources one can indicate the absence of large projects which would cover the entire territory of Ukraine, the fact that the publications are not systematic, the occasional weakness of the standard of editing, its poor institutional framework and the absence of specialized journals.

L’viv is of particular interest for ethnic and religious (national) studies in the early modern p... more L’viv is of particular interest for ethnic and religious (national) studies in the early modern period. No other town in the region was inhabited by four ethnic communities (Ruthenians – today’s Ukrainians – Poles, Jews and Armenians), each with a representation of more than five percent of the population, and possessing corresponding religious institutions: the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church, the Armenian Church and the Jewish religious community. Other ethnic groups, such as Germans, Italians, and Greeks and so on were included in these four ethnic and religious communities.
The notes of Martin Gruneweg are the oldest descriptions of Lvov handed down to our days. In L’viv he lived from his 20th until his 40th birthday in the years 1682 to 1602, what marked the greatest development of this town. At that time L’viv was a good example of a very complicated and sensitive structure of various ethnics, confessions and traditions, which lived together.

The central place where political decisions were made by cities in East-Central Europe was the to... more The central place where political decisions were made by cities in East-Central Europe was the town hall, which functioned as the main administrative building. It was located on the market square (Kraków, Lviv, Toruń) or the main street (Gdańsk). In Prussian cities, city governments competed with castles (government residences of the Teutonic Order or the Polish Kingdom). City councilors in Kraków and Lviv were forced to compete for control over the urban space with the representatives of the royal administration, located respectively at the Royal Castle at Wawel (Kraków) and the starosta government in the Low Castle (Lviv).
The Town Hall was the venue for all administrative, judicial, financial, and miscellaneous functions of the city councilors. Only Gdańsk, as the most developed urban center of the region with the most complex unctionality, concentrated solely administrative and representative functions at the Town Hall (while others were placed in additional prestigious buildings close to the city’s center). No ethnic and religious communities, craft guilds, and other institutions of urban life could create competitive
centers of socialization beside the Town Hall.

Ареалом її поширення стали західноукраїнські терени: від Лемківщини до Львова та галицького Поділля (сучасна Тернопільщина).
На прикладі цього твору простежується синтез місцевої української традиції із західним впливом у мелодиці, ритмі, пісенних інтонаціях, що стало виявом загальної тенденції розвитку української культури в час європейського бароко. У XVIII ст. – на початку ХХ ст. колядка “Радуйтеся вси людіе” поширюється у списках і редакціях та в друкованому вигляді. У її тексті відбуваються трансформації, створюються нові мелодії та музичні обробки твору. Про “живий” характер цієї духовної пісні свідчать музичні експерименти, до яких вдаються сучасні виконавці.

It is based on the author’s monograph written inUkrainian and published in 2003, which investigated the social and legal aspects of relations between the Jewish and Christian communities (M.Kapral, Natsional´ni hromady L´vova XVI–XVIII st. (sotsial´no-pravovi vzayemyny) (Lviv, 2003).

Kyiv and Lviv have become the main centers where studies of the medieval and early modern periods have resulted in the publishing of documents, although some editions have originated in Zhytomyr and Luts’k.

В публікації аналізуються обставини постання тексту, особа автора, історичні відомості (від Хмельниччини до 1794 р.), релігійні явища і події, природні катаклізми, національні аспекти взаємин тощо. Наявні документи свідчать, що вже у 1650-х роках у цій церкві, де з кінця XVI століття вже існувало церковне православне братство, практикували багатоголосий спів. Важливість цього дослідження полягає у тому, що воно демонструє типову музичну практику у периферійній українській міській церкві ранньо-модерного часу. Результати аналізу можна сміливо екстраполювати і на інші невеликі міські церкви давньої України. Ключові слова: фрактовий спів, Ірмолої, колядка, співаки, регенти, парафіяни.
The history of church singing of any particular temple should be started from the time of the first divine service held in it. Another thing is that such service is not always accompanied by documentary evidence. One of such "silent" churches until recently was the Lviv Epiphany Church, but thanks to the diligent and thorough work of the Ukrainian historian Myron Kapral', there was an opportunity to explore the musical aspect of its activities through documents. The importance of this article is that it demonstrates a typical musical practice in the peripheral Ukrainian church of the early modern era. The purpose of the study is to collect and analyze documents and other written sources concerning singing practices in the church. All available sources are investigated for the first time. Results and conclusions. It was discovered that in the 1650s, polyphony singing was already practiced in this church. In the early 1700s, the printed and hand-written linear (modern staff notation) Irmologions were kept in the church. In addition, among the documents of the brotherhood, has been preserved the manuscript with the ver-bal text of the Christmas carol (kolyadka) Raduytesya vsi lyudiye, dated by 1705. This list of carols is the oldest among Ukrainian sources. Thanks to the Book of Expenditures (1705-1791) of the Lviv Epiphany Brotherhood, we have information about singers and conductors of the church. Also, from the expenditure documents of the brotherhood, we can draw some information about several Lviv musicians, probably parishioners of the church. Among the large number of cities of East-Central- Europe in the fourteenth-sixteenth centuries, o... more Among the large number of cities of East-Central- Europe in the fourteenth-sixteenth centuries, only Lviv became the centre of four national communities: Catholics (Poles and Germans), Ukrainians (Ruthenians), Armenians and Jews, each of which had legal self-government. The Catholic community was the absolute master of the city, enjoying the all economic and political rights. Other national groups (Tatars, Karaites, Greeks, Italians and others), which also lived in the city, but were not the object of legal accommodation on the part of royal authority, joined one of the four national groups and enjoyed the rights of this.
